Why It Is Quite Difficult to Lose Weight for Women With PCOS?

Why It Is Quite Difficult to Lose Weight for Women With PCOS?

Increased weight condition is very common to women suffering from PCOS. Some studies suggest that half of the women with PCOS are overweight, who are recommended by doctors to lose weight to reduce the impact of lifestyle diseases. If you are also suffering from overweight issues due to PCOS then you must know how difficult it is to maintain a healthy weight. Let’s understand why some women with PCOS, face extreme difficulty in weight loss while others don’t.

Your Body Is Storing a Lot of Fats…

Excess of insulin production in the body causes your body to switch into fat storage mode making weight loss process difficult. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas in your body in response to the availability of glucose in the bloodstream. The insulin helps in the transport of glucose in the bloodstream to the cells of your body, where it can be converted into energy to perform basic cellular functions.

Under the PCOS condition, the normal secretion of insulin in response to glucose is altered leading to insulin-resistant, wherein our cells become resistant to insulin. This signals the pancreas to produce more insulin. Excess of insulin pushes the body to go into fat storage mode leading to weight gain. This is the reason most of the treatment options for PCOS management depend on balancing insulin levels through diet and exercise modifications or in some cases through supplementation.

Increased Appetite and Craving…

If you experience frequent hunger or cravings for sugary food then blame it to your imbalanced insulin levels. An increase in insulin resistance turns your body into high appetite mode. The reason is insulin is an appetite-stimulating hormone, more the levels- more you feel hungry. This is the major reason that females with PCOS find themselves craving for food more often than others. If these strong, instant cravings are not managed effectively, it can lead to high-calorie consumption and weight gain. To prevent this, nutritionist suggests opting for frequent healthy meals rich in protein and avoiding sugary foods.

Insulin Is Not The Only Culprit…

Though insulin is one of the crucial appetite-stimulating hormones, there exist many other hormones that influence satiety and appetite. Hormones like leptin, ghrelin, cholecystokinin are some of the common appetite-stimulating hormone known to influence appetite levels. Any kind of imbalance in the hormones stimulates hunger in women with PCOS in a manner similar to insulin regulation. This, in turn, leads to increased intake of food causing extensive weight gain. You can manage the hormonal balance by following a comprehensive diet and exercise routine.

Diet with Low Glycemic Index…

If you following a proper diet and still facing difficulty in managing your weight then you must check for the components you are eating. A study was conducted between two groups wherein they were given the same food with the same calories and equal distribution of macro & micronutrients but different glycemic index. It was observed that people consuming food with a low glycemic index experienced better weight loss in comparison to those consuming diet with a high glycemic index.

Check for obstructive sleep apnea…

Another major cause of weight gain among women with PCOS is obstructive sleep apnea. This condition occurs when there is any kind of blockage in the airways which limits the availability of oxygen while sleeping. This later causes day sleepiness, imbalanced blood pressure levels, and weight management issues. In addition to this, imbalance in the levels of androgens also impacts weight management in women with PCOS. Some studies show that high levels of androgens often affect the sleep receptors leading to severe sleep apnea.

If you are suffering from PCOS conditions and facing difficulty in managing weight even after putting a lot of efforts then you must consult your doctor. There is a need for improvising your diet and exercise routine to enhance the weight management process. We at Genetic Healing have a team of experts who can help you devise a highly impactful diet and exercise program for weight management. Feel free to seek a free consultation today itself to gain better insight.

FATE TO BE FAT!

FATE TO BE FAT!

Congratulations — for reaching your target weight!

But wait! Now what? Is the journey finished? Obviously a big No!

Keeping your weight off and preventing the inching menace of weight regain should be your new mission. You must have seen many people who lost Kg’s of weight soon gain it back.

So, hold yourself up before jumping out for a cheesy pizza. Learning how your body metabolism changes and how it reacts to the new body changes can help in devising new ways of dealing the menace. On ground level there are certain genes which play crucial role in determining your weight regain tendencies.  So buckle up to know yourself more!

Your Hungry Brain…Most of the time when you are feeling hungry, it’s your brain which puts you in such a state. There exists a complex brain circuit which signals hungriness. The hypothalamus region of the brain plays crucial role in mediating your hunger. Once you lose weight by controlling you’re eating habits you are putting your body under starving state, to this our body responds in a different way. As soon as our body knows we are starving its starts storing food in the form of glycogen and subsequently fats to generate energy. The starving state reduces the overall body energy expenditure. The multiple signaling cascades later influences the perception of food intake and increases the hunger feeling.

Satiety Hormone…The loss of weight majorly influences hormonal balance, one such hormone is “Leptin” – also known as Satiety hormone. Due to less energy requirement the metabolic signaling pathway of brain involving leptin gets affected. Leptin levels increases in obese condition whereas post weight loss the leptin levels increases inducing increased satiety and hunger.

It’s in your genes…Post weight loss journey some people tend to gain weight drastically & the answer to this lies in your genes! Your genes govern who you are! Certain genes also known as Fat genes such as FTO & ADRB2-2 play crucial role in weight regains. FTO gene is involved in appetite regulation, energy expenditure. Energy intake and also contributes to heritance of1% BMI. FTO variation in response to fat intake contributes to higher satiety & higher obesity tendency.

Keeping your hunger in check can sort the weight regain issue. Taking food rich in protein and fibers, having less calorie dense food, proper sleep, reduced stress and regular physical activity (as simple as walking) can be a mantra to stay fit & fine. You can play around with certain tactics to trick your brain when hungry. Weigh regularly, have good diet, try to find healthy alternative food, keep cheat days to satisfy your cheesy cravings, binge fruits and in case of any help always seek an expert advice.

The science of nutrigenomics works on the principles of combinational understanding of genes and nutrition, can use for getting best results. Understand your body more by understanding your genes! Let your genes decide what is good for you and complement the bad with good nutrition. The most important thing at last is to change your mindset. From “losing weight” one should more focus to “avoid gaining weight”. Make the process slow rather than being drastic and remember “Being Consistent” is the key.

CLOCK Gene Test For Weight Loss

CLOCK Gene Test For Weight Loss

“Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food”- Hippocrates cited this back in 490 B.C. Science today is pounding over this concept of food based intervention for weight loss specifically tailored to person’s genetic makeup. The research shows that diet shaped according to person’s metabolism may be more effective than non-specialized calorie reduction in helping him or her lose weight i.e. via Nutrigenomics.

Nutrigenomics is the tailoring of one’s diet to their DNA. Personalised Genetic Testing is the key point here, as ONE SIZE FITS ALL concept is not applicable when it comes to your body. Thus, one should revoke the common notion of “WE ARE WHAT WE EAT” and follow the path of “EAT FOR WHO WE ARE”.

“To understand nutrition and health, we need to understand how our unique biology works to keep our body in balance.” This is assessed through our Biological clock also known as CIRCADIAN RHYTHM – The Hero of 2017 Nobel Prize. It involves assessment of individual’s CLOCK gene responsible for timing one’s metabolic activity. Internal biological clocks allow for anticipation of the requirements from body systems at different times of the day and the ability to adapt to changes in external lifestyle factors.

The importance of integration of lifestyle factors, such as timing of eating, activity and sleep with our internal biological clocks is revealed in situations of circadian misalignment that lead to suboptimal health and disease states in the longer term. This concept up lights the path paved towards weight loss. CLOCK gene, affects both the persistence and period of circadian rhythms. Genetic Testing for this gene can help in identifying the CULPRIT for your weight gain. So, buckle up to TIME YOUR FOOD INTAKE AND EXERCISE, TO TIME YOUR WEIGHT LOSS.

Nuclear Bunker: It’s Time to Focus on Your Body Clock!

Nuclear Bunker: It’s Time to Focus on Your Body Clock!

Efforts have been made to decode the working of the biological Body Clock, which often reiterates the age-old nature versus nurture debate. But today’s scientists have conceded that neither nature nor nurture solely can illustrate the molecular mechanism which governs our health. In most of the cases, the predisposition to a health condition is merely due to the presence of a certain gene or a mutation (alteration at the DNA level). This understanding of genes has allowed us to focus on the multifaceted gene-based approach for various health concerns.

Many studies targeting body clock have shown that a disrupted body clock can increase risk towards various health concerns such as diabetes, heart disease, depression etc. A healthy body clock can positively influence the entire health make up. Keeping this in mind a famous project called “Nuclear Bunker” was conducted by BBC–“The Horizon” in association with Ella Al- Shamahi. Where in an army commando Aldo Kane was locked in the nuclear bunker for about 10 days!

So let’s gauge the journey of his 10 days locked up period & how it influenced the body clock….

Locked In A Nuclear Bunker….

You must be thinking why to lock in a bunker that too a nuclear one! Well, it was necessary to keep the commando away from the daylight which directly affects our body circadian rhythm (Biological Body Clock). This way his body clock was controlled using artificial lights available in the bunker.

The Scientific Funda of Body Clock….

The discovery of Body Clock has been marked with Nobel Prize in 2017 to the scientist Jeffrey Hall and Michael Roshbash. Every one of us has a body clock which allows us to march in a 24-hour cycle. This body clock is located near hypothalamus region of our brain (located at the base) which works in response to the day sunlight received. In response to this daylight, different hormones and signals are transmitted throughout the body which regulates this 24-hour rhythm of waking, eating, sleeping, working and continuing the same at fixed timings.

The studies also revealed a gene known as Clock Gene located on Chromosome 4 in human, which regulates the body clock.

Coming back to Nuclear Bunker Experiment….

The study was carried out in 3 phases –

Phase 1 – Where Aldo was left in a bunker and was allowed to follow the normal routine work in absence of daylight.

Phase 2“Going Dim”, Earlier Aldo was able to control the lights but in this phase, he was kept on Dim light mode thus inducing a shift in the body clock.

Phase 3“Jet Lag Mode”, flying through two time zones disrupts the sleep until the next few days due to disruption in body clock. Here Aldo was kept in continuous Jet lag with no break by waking him up before his normal timings.

The observation throughout the Experiment…

Initial phases he was able to keep 24 hr. cycle rather than exceeding for 12 hr. or 36 hr. cycle. This tells that in such excluded environment it was his body clock which kept things to tick on time!

But as soon as he was shifted to phase 3 where there was no daylight, his body entered a “Free Running” stage where his body struggled to keep note of time. Whereas putting back into the normal condition recalibrated his body clock to normal again.

The relevance in today’s lifestyle….

This experiment paved way for the scientist to know more about the CLOCK Gene- The driving force behind your Body Clock. Working according to your body clock can help your body transform into a healthy you! Know your body clock through Clock Gene test & start eating and exercising according to it to experience rapid transformation.

PCOS –Story of Bane to Boon!

PCOS –Story of Bane to Boon!

Don’t give your past the power to define your future”- This thought becomes more prominent among those who stronghold their commitment towards health goals. Have you ever found certain medicine not working for you? Ever wondered why it happens? The answer to this lies within your “Genes”.

Genetics governs the entire health of an individual and tendency towards diseases. PCOS is one such condition with complex hormonal disorder which affects 10 million women globally resulting in most common cause of infertility among women. This is where science of Nutrigenomics paves in, furnishing a more precise and successful treatment using Nutrition and Genetics. We at Genetic Healing work on principle of ‘Let food be thy medicine’. Our team of experts (Nutrigenomic Counsellors) traverses through cases that inflict the mind to bring exorbitant change in someone’s life. Now, that you’re all caught up…let’s continue our cognizance over her journey …

The patient in this case study is a female, who is an aspiring doctor. Her struggle started 2 years back when she was diagnosed with PCOS. Irregular periods became new normal for her; she tried to balance it with medicines, but it didn’t relieve her from sufferings completely. Before she met us she was experiencing delayed periods for 6 month which became quite frustrating for her. But winners are those who don’t give up and hence, she took charge of her life and ended up to Genetic Healing. A dedicated team of Nutrigenomist helped her with Pre Test Counselling to suggest her appropriate genetic tests (PCOS PANEL).

Findings from Nutrigenomic test –

As per the Nutrigenomic report it was found that her detoxification genes were carrying a variation due to which both Phase 1 and Phase 2 Detoxification process were inefficient. The genes for Oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, fat gain, Increased BMI were also affected. The most noticing point was, In case of estrogen metabolism some genes were found to be affected which creates problem in elimination and also high impact of environmental factors on estrogen metabolism.

Nutrigenomic Solution –

The main pillar of this case lies with Nutrigenomic Counsellors who gave detailed inputs about her condition. So the genetic test cleared the mirror and helped Nutrigenomist to work on her weaknesses and Strengths based on her Nutrigenomic Report. They gave her a Personalized Diet and Exercise recommendations. She followed recommendations with full dedication and positive results can be seen just after 1 month. In follow up counselling she expressed following response –

I had a very good experience with Genetic Healing. So I am very happy and will definitely recommend this to each and everyone.

This was miraculous for her and though her symptoms were not fully alleviated, they became manageable. This gives an enormous leap forward for this woman’s health and aptness to cope day in and day out. Nothing in this world is more beautiful than helping someone find their true self, allowing them to live their life on their own terms rather being guided by some disorders.

How DNA Testing Can Become The Solution For All Your Dieting Issues

How DNA Testing Can Become The Solution For All Your Dieting Issues

For several years people have been trying to improve their fitness and looks through a variety of diets. Unfortunately, most of these diets fail to deliver on what they promise. This is mostly because every person’s body is very different on a genetic level, which defines their specific nutritional needs. The approach of trying to force your body to a one-size-fits-all diet fails to address these needs appropriately.

Getting your genes tested to gain an exact idea of what your body needs is the best way to see how your body will react to different nutritional inputs, and what food is beneficial or harmful to your body. Centers for DNA testing like Genetic Healing study your genes in detail and help create diet plans that are accurately customized for you. Our technology of international standards helps you to understand your body, which boosts your efforts and efficiency in meeting your fitness goals. Let us understand how nutrients can affect a person, and what a DNA test may reveal about them.

Metabolizing Carbs:
Carbohydrates are essential nutrients that are required to generate energy for all body functions. A gene test can tell you how much of fast carbohydrates (sugar, tubers, soft drinks) and slow carbohydrates (vegetables, greens, legumes, grains) you should consume for your daily dietary requirements. If your body is not inclined towards metabolizing carbohydrates efficiently, a higher proportion of slow carbs can be more beneficial for you, due to their slow release rate of energy.

Chances of Regaining Weight – Your genes can also tell you exactly how fast you can lose or gain weight. This can be understood mainly due to the study of the adiponectin hormone. This hormone is generated by the fat cells and it is responsible for the appropriate utilization of fat from one’s diet to obtain optimal energy. The more adiponectin hormone produced by the body, the more does it help in easing out weight loss and management. Gene testing can tell you exactly what your chances are of regaining weight and can help you create a comprehensive plan for effective weight management.

The critical thing to remember no matter what diet you are following is to primarily focus on 3 major points: reduce the consumption of refined sugars and carbs, increase the number of vegetables you eat, and choosing to eat nutrient filled home-cooked foods as far as possible. Finding a diet that you don’t find too difficult to maintain while meeting all parameters of healthy food is precisely what is needed to sustain the diet for a more extended period, ensuring the success of weight loss and fitness.

The quality of the food choices you make can create a significant impact regardless of how your diet is structured. Satiety is also very important. As far as possible try to eat foods that helped you feel fuller for a more extended period of time.

For more guidance on how you should structure your dietary habits according to your genes, get a gene test done today.
